Alan Levenson
Philosemitism and Antisemitism In Germany 1871-1932
The ‘Tree of Life’ synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh confirmed what had long been feared: antisemitism in America, never dead, has been emboldened by rough politics and rougher rhetoric. But another phenomenon was also revealed: Americans of all backgrounds came to together in numerous vigils and commemorations to express their support – dare we say affection, for American Jews? That dualism, between pervasive antisemitism and oppositional philosemitism has been part of many modern nations – even in Germany, at least until the Nazis declared Jew-friendliness (Judenfreundlichkei) a crime. Explore this phenomenon with Prof. Levenson, author of Between Philosemitism and Antisemitism (Lincoln: University of Nebraska, 2004/2013).
Alan Levenson (BA/MA Brown University, Ph.D. Ohio State University), holds the Schusterman/Josey Chair of Jewish History at the University of Oklahoma and serves as Director of the Schusterman Center for Judaic & Israel Studies. Alan taught history, thought and Bible at Siegal College before coming to the University of Oklahoma.

1. An Introduction to Modern Jewish Thinkers: An Introduction (Jason Aronson, 2000; 2nd edition with Rowman & Littlefield, 2006);
